Sound Sultan: The pristine Nigerian legend [Pulse Obituary]

Born   Olanrewaju Abdul-Ganiu Fasasi  on November 27, 1976, Sound Sultan is a bonafide legend of Nigerian music. Dying at 44 will not change that… A lot of non-culture inclined young Nigerians outside Lagos only knew of Sound Sultan when he performed ‘Mathematics’ at the maiden edition of ‘Nights of a Thousand Laughs.’ After that event, most Alaba ‘DJ selection’ CDs got the title of the record wrong as either ‘BODMAS’ or ‘Jagbajantis.’ To the average culture-inclined Lagosian, Sultan was no stranger. Over the past few years prior to 2002, his brother,  Baba Dee  was part of a wave that pioneered the Hip-Hop-infused early machinations of Nigerian pop. By the late 90’s, he had morphed into something of a maven and Sultan used to make appearances on his TV show where he gathered some momentum. As a Festac/Satellite Town-bred artist, he was also closely associated with acts like  2Face Idibia  and more. He also allegedly wrote and featured on ‘ Soji ’ al...

GOZ teams up with producer, Yung Willis for new single, 'Money Anthem

He calls his sound Afro-drill and is confident that it’ll soon go mainstream. Chigozie Basil, professionally known as GOZ is set to make his debut in the fast-growing Nigerian music scene in style with his first official single, titled “Money Anthem”. For this song, GOZ teams up with hit record producer, Yung Willis who delivers this high tempo, reverberating beat which Goz laces with his artistic finesse. Goz’s bounce on the beat is characteristic of Afro-Trap (which is a subgenre of HipHop and American Trap) but with an Afrobeats touch that brings it home. He calls his sound Afro-drill and is confident that it’ll soon go mainstream. In Money Anthem, GOZ alludes to the state of the Nation in a scintillating style as he depicts Nigerian politicians sharing money & the Nation's wealth while they ignore the people. On the chorus, he can be heard singing “Share Money, Share Funds” as he jokingly urges the government to share the funds and let it go round, so more citizens can ba...

Wiz is only about b*itches, while I’m about real life’; Burna Boy says Wizkid is not his competition

Burna Boy wasn't happy when the interviewer said Wizkid is his competition. Nigerian music star  Burna Boy  has downplayed the competition between him and another superstar  Wizkid . With a dominant run that came with a Grammy Award win and nomination, Burna Boy is considered the face of Afrobeats along with other superstars, including Wizkid. But in a recent interview, the 30-year-old singer downplayed the competition between him and Wizkid. The ‘African Giants’ singer seems unimpressed with  DJ Whoo Kid ’s suggestion that Wizkid is a competition in the Best Global Music Album category of the Grammy Awards. “ We are in two very different lanes in life; the only similarities really is the fact that we are from the same place and we love each other, ” Burna Boy said. Burna Boy and Wizkid both won awards at the last Grammys  what brings us together cause of where we are from and the love we have for each other. Other than that, we are two different lanes. “...

Meet Apex and Bionic, two movie makers who featured Davido and 2face on their album, 'Nobody Holy' [Pulse Album Review]

Hold Up ’ is easily one of the best songs that this writer has heard in 2021. It deserves to have a remix, possibly with an   Olamide  feature. According to their Wikipedia, Apex and Bionic are a Nigerian R&B duo of brothers Andrew Omokhudu and Daniel Omokhudu. After they started making music for the mass market in 2014, their biggest moment came in 2019 when they released ‘For Your Matter’ featuring 2Face Idibia. Currently, they are signed to JFK Resolute Entertainment Record Label. In November 2020, They announced and released a fresh album and movie titled  Nobody Holy. This Body of work Features  2face, Davido, OritseFemi Seyi Shay , and  SlimCase . Despite being Benin boys, their biggest credit is that they sang in English, Pidgin and especially Yoruba, with some degree of fluency on ‘ Je K’a Lowo,’ ‘Ife Mi’  and ‘ Wa Gba .’ The overall tone of the album is themed around topics of love and money. When the album discusses love, the tone is te...
